Finasteride (Proscar), a medication widely used to treat androgenic alopecia, is primarily prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by enlargement of the prostate gland and a reduction in the flow of urine through the urinary tract. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is responsible for causing the shrinking of the prostate gland and plays a crucial role in the development of BPH. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride helps to improve urinary flow and alleviate symptoms of BPH, such as frequent urination and difficulty urinating.
In the United States alone, finasteride has been approved for the treatment of BPH and is frequently prescribed for hair loss. However, the effectiveness and safety of finasteride for the treatment of BPH have been extensively questioned. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed that finasteride significantly decreased the need for prostate surgery and led to a reduction in the need for prostatectomy in men with BPH, highlighting the need for further research in this area.
In contrast to the efficacy of finasteride for the treatment of BPH, the safety and tolerability of finasteride for BPH have been well-established and well-studied. The results of a meta-analysis of RCTs indicated that finasteride reduced the risk of aseptic men’s access to medical resources by more than 70% when compared with a placebo group, and that the use of finasteride for BPH was well-tolerated, with a median safety and tolerability rate of 87.6% and 88.3%, respectively.
In the present study, we sought to determine the effects of finasteride on BPH treatment outcomes in men with BPH using a meta-analysis and a systematic review. Our meta-analysis was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of finasteride’s efficacy and safety in BPH and evaluate the impact on finasteride’s tolerability and tolerability profile when compared with placebo.
A literature search was performed by the ClinicalTrials.gov website, and publications were included if they were relevant to finasteride’s efficacy or safety in BPH.

Proscar tablets are used to treat male pattern hair loss in men (androgenetic alopecia) in order to reduce the frequency of hair loss in men with male pattern hair loss.
Proscar and Propecia (Finasteride) are both FDA-approved medications for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). While Proscar and Propecia differ in their use of finasteride, they both belong to the same class of medications called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
While Proscar is approved for use in the treatment of male pattern hair loss, and Propecia is used to treat hair loss in women, finasteride was also FDA-approved for use in men after a study showed that men who took finasteride had a 1-2-fold increase in their risk of prostate cancer.
Finasteride is the generic version of Propecia. Generic versions of Propecia are more expensive, while finasteride is the brand name for Proscar. The FDA also regulates the use of finasteride in its original form.
Finasteride is also prescribed to treat male pattern baldness in some cases.
Propecia works by blocking an enzyme called type II 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into a male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is primarily responsible for hair loss in men. By reducing the amount of DHT in your body, Propecia helps stop hair loss and promote regrowth.
Finasteride is only FDA-approved for use in the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
